Medical marijuana was legalized in Alaska in 1998 and according to state law, patients can grow up to six marijuana plants and possess up to one ounce of marijuana. Patients can purchase a wide range of cannabis products including flowers, edibles, and concentrates.

How to Get a Medical Card in Alaska

Prospective medical marijuana patients in Alaska must first apply to the state’s Department of Health and Social Services. 

The applicant must print and fill out the application for registry identification card for medical use of marijuana and the physician statement. 

The applicant and/or the caregiver must also pay a nonrefundable fee of $25. 

The physician must write in their form that they have a bona fide physician-patient relationship with the applicant, who has a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. 

Qualifying Conditions

In Alaska, a patient can receive a recommendation for medical marijuana for the following conditions:

• Cancer
• Glaucoma
• Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or treatment for any of these conditions 
• Any chronic or debilitating disease or treatment for such diseases, which produces, for a specific patient, one or more of the following, and for which, in the professional opinion of the patient’s physician, such condition or conditions reasonably may be alleviated by the medical use of the marijuana: 
  • Cachexia
  • Severe pain
  • Severe nausea
  • Seizures, including those that are characteristic of epilepsy
  • Persistent muscle spasms, including those that are characteristic or multiple sclerosis

Reciprocity

Alaska does not allow out-of-state medical marijuana recipients to use their license in the state. 

Where to Buy

In 2014, Alaska voters approved recreational marijuana legalization in the state, and in 2016, the state’s first legal retail stores opened in the state. Patients can purchase medical marijuana products at medical or recreational dispensaries across the state.
