Peanut butter cannabis cookies are the perfect treat, combining a mellow high with memories of this favorite childhood snack.
The legalization of cannabis in many US states has been accompanied by an explosion in the popularity of edibles, from store-bought gummies to home-made brownies.
Cooking with cannabis is relatively easy (if a bit time consuming) and allows you to enjoy delicious, THC-rich foods and drinks. Edibles take a bit longer to kick in than other methods of using cannabis, but also typically last much longer, and can offer a low-key, mellow high.

Cooking with cannabis: tips and common mistakes
The best cannabis peanut butter cookies recipes are fairly straightforward, but there are some important things to keep in mind.
Top tips for cooking with weed
- Pay attention. Cooking edibles, specifically cannabutter, involves hours of stove time. So keep an eye on your butter, stir it occasionally, and make sure it doesn’t burn.
- Don’t use top-shelf flowers for cooking. The long infusion process absorbs a lot of the flower’s THC, cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids; so much of this will be wasted on edibles.
- Know where your edibles come from. Always prepare the edibles yourself, or only consume edibles that are made by people you trust.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Skipping decarboxylation. It is essential to decarb your cannabis before cooking with it to activate the THC, so don’t skip this step.
- Not waiting for the effects to kick in. Edibles can take thirty minutes to two hours or more to have an effect — don’t get impatient and consume more too quickly, as you risk overdosing.
- Not eating first. It’s recommended not to eat edibles on an empty stomach.
- Driving under the influence. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after ingesting edibles.
Why decarboxylation is important
To make peanut butter cookies with weed, you’ll need to start by decarboxylating your cannabis. This is an important step because it activates the THC.
The cannabis plant contains a cannabinoid called THCA which needs to be heated in order to be converted into THC.
Decarboxylation involves heating the cannabis, usually by baking it in the oven, to unlock the THC.

How to make cannabutter
Once you’ve decarboxylated your cannabis, you can make cannabutter to use in your peanut butter weed cookies. Cannabutter is cannabis-infused butter that you can use to make cookies, brownies, or a range of other desserts and foods.
There are a few different ways to make cannabutter, but the easiest is using a saucepan.
Here’s a simple cannabutter recipe using a saucepan:
Ingredients
- 3-14 grams of ground, decarboxylated cannabis (depending on your desired dosage)
- 2 sticks (one cup) of butter
- Water
- Cheesecloth
- Storage container
Instruction
- Place a cup of water and 2 sticks of water in a saucepan and simmer until the butter melts.
- Mix in the decarboxylated cannabis and simmer at 70 – 80 degrees F, checking periodically to make sure it doesn’t boil.
- After two to three hours, remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
- Pour it into a container through a cheesecloth to strain.
- Congratulations! You now have potent cannabutter ready to be used in any edible recipe.
How much weed should I use?
Dosing is important when making marijuana peanut butter cookies, or any kind of cannabis edible. Edibles take longer to have an effect than smoking, but the effect also lasts longer, so it’s even more critical that you get the dosing right. Otherwise, you may end up getting a more intense high than you wanted.
Generally speaking, using around three grams of cannabis per cup of butter will produce a mild dose, and up to 14 grams per cup of butter will result in a very strong, medicinal-level dose.
However, this is not an exact science. It’s hard to predict the exact THC content of homemade edibles, as this depends on a range of factors, including your own tolerance levels. The best approach is to start with smaller doses, such as half or even a quarter of a cookie. You can gradually increase your dosage over time as you get used to the edibles.
Last but certainly not least, be sure to keep your peanut butter cannabis cookies out of the reach of children, who may mistake it for a tasty, kid-friendly snack!

cup cannabutter
- 1
cup peanut butter (we recommend crunchy)
- 1
cup brown sugar (packed)
- 1
cup white sugar
- 2
large eggs
- 2.5
cups all-purpose flour
- 1
teaspoon baking powder
- 1.5
teaspoons baking soda
- 0.5
teaspoon salt
Method
- Make your cannabutter (see instructions above).

- Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir together to create a dough.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for an hour.
- Take a small piece of dough and roll it into a ball – the ball should be around one inch in diameter. Place the ball on the baking sheet and flatten it with a fork.
- Bake for around 10 minutes – the cookies should be just starting to brown on the edges.
Once cooked, let the cookies cool on a wire rack before eating, then they’ll be ready to enjoy! Just remember to avoid overdosing – if in doubt, start with half a cookie the first time and test the effects. Wait at least an hour before trying more.
