An intro to cooking with cannabis
Why go to all the trouble of making homemade chips when you could just as easily pack a bowl? Sure it’s faster, but smoking and edibles are two different ways of getting high.

Cooking with cannabis gives you more options than rolling a joint or packing a bowl. Edibles create a full-body high experience, take longer to kick in, and last longer than a smoking high. It’s the perfect way to add some variety to your cannabis consumption or share the plant with a friend who doesn’t smoke.
Edibles are also a great option for people who can’t smoke or don’t enjoy the smell of weed smoke.
Tips for making weed Doritos
- Adjust the seasonings to your taste. If you like a spicier chip, add more chili powder.
- Let your chips cool on a sheet pan or cooling rack for at least an hour after they leave the oven to crisp up.
- It can be tempting to chow down on your chips, but pace yourself and don’t overdo it. Edibles can take over an hour to kick in, so if you eat too many, you’ll be in over your head when they kick in. Remember to go slow.
How to make cannaoil
The easiest way to make edibles is with a cannabis infusion of oil or butter. This Doritos edibles recipe calls for cannaoil, and you can use avocado, olive, or coconut oil.
To make cannabis-infused oil, you’ll need:
- 1 c ground decarboxylated cannabis
- 1 c of olive oil or coconut oil or MCT oil
- Crockpot
- Storage container
- Cheesecloth
Instructions
- Set the crockpot to low.
- Combine the weed and oil in the crockpot and let sit for up to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Let the mix cool and strain through a cheesecloth into a storage container.
The importance of decarboxylation
A key step in making infused oil is decarboxylating the weed. Decarboxylation is a chemical change process where acidic cannabinoids like THCA and CBDA turn into THC and CBD.
When you smoke weed, your lighter provides the heat necessary to make this change. But for edibles, you must apply heat to the cannabis first, before cooking with it. This ensures that your infusion will have noticeable psychoactive effects most commonly associated with THC.
Doweedos: making homemade weed chips
This homemade Doritos recipe from Moments with Mandi is easily modified by substituting the olive oil for cannaoil.
Ingredients
Method
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or spray it with a nonstick cooking spray.
- Use a pastry brush to brush oil on each side of your tortillas.
- Stack the tortillas and cut them into quarters.
- Combine the seasoning in a large ziplock bag and, one by one, add the tortillas ensuring they don’t stick together and shake to coat.
- Lay the chips on the baking tray and bake for 10 – 15 minutes. Keep an eye on them in the oven Ensuring they don’t burn.
- Remove from the oven and allow the chips to cool, dry, and harden for an hour or two before enjoying.
Dosing your edibles correctly
Unlike smoking, where you feel the effects almost instantly, edibles can take over an hour to kick in. This delayed onset makes dosing crucial to have a good high experience.
Eating too many THC chips at once could lead to greening out, which is not a good time. Measuring the strength of homemade edibles can be challenging, so always start with a small dose to understand the potency and how the edible makes you feel. You can have more later, but you can’t have less.
Always store your edibles in a labeled container in a secure place. Edibles can be easily confused for other foods by children, which can lead to a scary situation if they get into it. Avoid this entirely by storing your edibles far out of their reach.
