Overview
It might not be the most exciting ice cream flavor by a long shot, but there’s nothing plain about the Cookies and Cream strain. This sweet, potent hybrid can provide powerful body and cerebral highs, and boasts a parentage that includes a phenotype of one of the world’s most popular strains — Girl Scout Cookies. With a smell and flavor that evokes vanilla and ice cream, and a high THC count, the Cookies and Cream strain will have you making sure to save room for dessert.
Lineage and general info
The breeders at Exotic Genetix in Washington state are most commonly named as the creators of Cookies and Cream. In a 2018 interview with Leafly, founder Mike described the process that went behind crafting their award winning strains, including Kimbo Kuish, Trap Star, Lemon Meringue, and Cookies and Cream, which won the Best Hybrid award at the 2017 High Times SoCal Harvest Cannabis Cup. The strain also won 1st place in the Best US Hybrid category at the 2014 Denver Cannabis Cup, where it was praised for its “sweet flavor and aroma” and “long-lasting relief for patients treating symptoms through the day.”
In the interview, Mike said “I look at breeding as an art form,” and encouraged would-be growers to “make something of your own first. It’s all about making it into your own art form.”
Mike also said that he especially loves to focus on the frost produced by cannabis buds, and that “plenty of good strains have frost, but when we throw our twist on genetics or come out with new strains, they glisten and that is what we’ve strived for since day one.”
This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise if you’ve held some Cookies and Cream nugs in your hand, and gazed at the dark green and purple-toned nugs covered in frosty trichomes.
Cookies and Cream is a balanced 50/50 hybrid bred by crossing Starfighter and GSC (Girl Scout Cookies). The plant produces small- to medium-sized buds that can have a slight vanilla scent, and a taste that can be sour, sweet, and very smooth. The aroma can also be rather skunky, thanks to its Starfighter genes.
The high is described as one befitting such a well-balanced hybrid — not too much couchlock, not too energetic, just the right, like a nice bowl of ice cream.
Cannabinoids and terpenes in Cookies and Cream
There are thousands of cannabis chemovars out there, and no real standards as to how to identify them — basically anyone can grow anything and call it whatever they want. In other words — there are better ways to choose a strain than on the name alone.
The chemical profile you see below is an average of laboratory tests for products called Cookies and Cream — so it’s just an estimate of what you might find when you buy cookies and cream weed.
How Cookies and Cream affects you
Based on user reports from resources such as Leafly and Wikileaf, Cookies and Cream tends to produce relaxation, happiness and euphoria, and could cause dry mouth, dry eyes, and dizziness. But really, marijuana affects people in different ways. The two main factors are your own biology (your endocannabinoid system, metabolism, age, weight, etc). and the product you choose (the cannabinoid profile, the terpenes breakdown and the delivery method).
That being said, the above chemical profile contains BCP, humulene, terpinolene and limonene, which could potentially help with IBD (crohn’s diseases and ulcerative colitis), depression, arthritis and pain.
Cookies and Cream growing tips
According to Exotic Genetix, Cookies and Cream grows medium tall flowers in 56-63 days, and is a medium-to-heavy-yield strain. Cookies and Cream is typically described as a difficult strain to grow, and not the best choice for first time growers. On the other hand, it has a very short flowering time, around 8 weeks, and can produce a sizable yield of around one pound per full-size plant grown outdoors.
The strain requires careful pruning and a watchful eye on the temperature if grown indoors, to make sure it doesn’t get outside the 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range.
When growing cannabis, the right seeds can make even an amateur feel (and look) like a pro. With the naked eye, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between regular seeds and those from a prize-winning strain. This is where buying from a trusted seedhouse comes in.
Related Strains
Cookies and Cream is a well-balanced hybrid that doesn’t produce too sedative or energetic an effect, so people who like such even-keeled strains should find that it suits their liking. Like its parent strain GSC, it can produce a euphoric and energetic high that can also relax the body. Its other parent strain Starfighter is also a well-balanced hybrid, which provides an energetic high and packs a high level of THC. It also can have purple hues at times, like Cookies and Cream.
This is a strain that works well both for day and night use, similar to other “Goldilocks” strains like Blue Dream (a mix of the relaxing Blueberry strain and a haze) or Cherry Pie (a cross of the very chill Granddaddy Purple and the upbeat daytime strain Durban Poison), which are just right at any time of day.
