Are you smoking from a dirty bong?
Not only do clean bongs look better, they also hit better. Resin build-up in your bong impacts the flavor and quality of your smoke, and if it’s been a while since you cleaned your piece, you may be surprised by the difference a clean bong makes.
But cleaning your bong regularly isn’t just good for aesthetics – it’s also better for your lungs. Resin build-up in a moist bong provides an ideal environment for bacteria, mold, and fungi to form, and inhaling these can cause serious health issues. In addition to changing the water in between smoke sessions, your bong should be cleaned regularly to reduce this risk. Clean your bong weekly, when there’s resin build up, or if there’s particles floating in the water.
You can make your own bong cleaner out of isopropyl alcohol and other household items, but this method can be intensive, and won’t be as effective for bongs with a lot of buildup or old resin. Using a specially formulated bong cleaner can make it faster and easier to get your glass sparkling again.

How to clean a bong
There are many different methods and anecdotal remedies you can use to get your bong sparkling clean again, and ultimately the choice comes down to what’s easiest for you.
How to clean your bong with isopropyl alcohol and salt
This is perhaps the most famous homemade bong cleaning solution. Use the highest percentage isopropyl alcohol you can find (70 – 90%) and a very coarse salt, like rock salt or Epsom salt.
First, disassemble your bong and rinse everything with warm water. Add up to ½ c of salt to your bong and then the alcohol. Cover the holes and shake vigorously for five minutes. Rinse with warm water and repeat if needed.
How to clean your bong with vinegar and baking soda
Disassemble the bong and rinse everything with warm water. Fill the base of your bong with white vinegar and add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Cover the holes at the mouthpiece and down stem and shake vigorously. Rinse with warm water when the vinegar has turned brown, and repeat if still dirty.
Soak the bowl and any other detachable parts in a ziplock bag of baking soda and vinegar for up to an hour.
How to clean your bong with boiling water
Bring a pot of water to boil. The pot will need to be large enough to hold your bong and you’ll need enough water to cover the piece completely. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and submerge your bong for 30 minutes. Drain the water and use pipe cleaners to remove any remaining build-up.
This cleaning process requires a balance – if there isn’t enough water in the pot, or it’s too hot, your bong could crack. But if it’s not warm enough, it won’t work.
How to clean your bong with water and lemon
Juice 1 – 2 large lemons, separating the seeds, and bring a pot of water to boil. Add the lemon juice and the water to the bong, covering the resin build up. Cover the holes and shake vigorously. Let it sit for 5 minutes and rinse with warm water.
Bottom line
Smoking from a cleaning bong is better all around – for your lungs, the quality of your hits, and the flavor of your weed. It’s also good stoner manners – who wants to smoke out of someone’s resin-filled bong?
Whether you prefer using household items to clean your bong or a specially-formulated cleaner to get it sparkling in minutes, this is the sign you’ve been waiting for – clean your bong!
