How to Get a Medical Card in Maine

To receive medical marijuana in Maine, an applicant must apply online with the Medical Use of Marijuana Program.

Prospective patients must submit their personal details and the number of plants they want to grow (up to six, and only if they are interested in cultivating their own marijuana), their caregiver information if relevant, and the ID number of their certified medical provider, who can provide a medical marijuana recommendation on their behalf.

There is no fee to apply, but caregivers must pay a fee if they are growing marijuana for a patient ($240 for each group of six plants). The fee schedule can be found here.

Maine has amended its medical marijuana laws to allow physicians to recommend medical marijuana for “a diagnosed medical condition that, in the patient’s medical provider’s opinion, may be alleviated by the therapeutic use of cannabis.”

Maine allows residents of a limited number of states to use their out of state medical marijuana license to purchase marijuana in the state.

In 2010, approval was given for eight medical dispensaries. The law currently allows patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces of dried flower or concentrate. At Maine’s medical dispensaries, patients can purchase flower, concentrate, edibles, pre-rolls, topicals, and vapes.
