Why consider CBD drink recipes?

For many, there’s nothing better than a joint or a packed bowl to unwind. But cannabis is a versatile plant, and sometimes it’s fun to switch things up.

Cooking with cannabis (or infusing drinks with cannabis, in this case) lets you get creative, play with flavors, and try something new. It’s a great way to share the benefits of cannabis with friends who don’t want to smoke (and it gives your lungs a break.)

Tips for mixing CBD infused drinks

  • Decarboxylate your cannabis before making the tincture to ensure you get the full benefit of CBD.
  • Despite the term “tincture” being thrown around a lot in cannabis, it usually refers to infused oils. Traditionally tincture refers to the presence of alcohol, which is what this recipe entails. While cannabis oil could be added to these drinks, they wouldn’t mix nearly as well as an ethanol-based CBD tincture.
  • Experiment with flavors and ingredients! Don’t be afraid to try new things or switch up old cocktail recipes with CBD.
  • Measure your CBD dose so you know how much you’re having. While a CBD tincture won’t produce the same impairing effects as THC it’s still important to measure your consumption, especially if you’re taking prescription medications. CBD has the potential to interact with numerous pharmaceuticals.

The importance of decarboxylation

Decarboxylating your cannabis is the first step in any edibles recipe. Decarbing is the process by which acidic cannabinoids like THCA and CBDA are converted into the THC and CBD you know and love. When you roll a joint, the lighter takes care of the decarbing for you, but with edibles, you have to create the conditions for the chemical change yourself.

You can also make a CBD tincture without decarbing your bud. You’ll benefit from the properties of CBDA, which are similar to CBD, but the physical effects of the tincture will be less noticeable.

CBD tincture recipe

Making a CBD tincture is easier than you think! All you need is your CBD flower, high-proof alcohol, and a few common kitchen items.

How to make CBD tincture

  • Finely grind and decarb your CBD-rich bud at 240F for 30 minutes. Remove and let cool.
  • Put the flower into a glass jar and pour the alcohol over it. Gently shake to combine.
  • Store your tincture in a cool, dark storage space and let it sit for at least 24 hours. The longer you let it sit, the stronger it will be. You can let it sit for up to a month.
  • When you’re ready to use your tincture, strain the mix through a cheesecloth into a large storage container. Strain the mix at least twice before transferring to a small glass dropper bottle. Store your tincture in a cool, dark place.

How to dose your tincture

It can be hard to measure the potency of a homemade tincture. Potency can range widely depending on the herb you used to make the tincture, so start with a low dose and go slowly. Allow yourself at least a couple hours after dosing to feel the full effects of the tincture. A half mL or 1 mL is plenty to start with. Once you know how strong it is, you can adjust the dose to 2.5 mL or even 5 mL from there.

Always store your tincture in a secure location, properly labeled and away from kids and pets.
