Celebrating Mechoulam’s 90th birthday, CannX goes virtual

Sit tight, kick back, and think big — this year, CannX is coming to you, with a virtual conference on October 26-28, featuring some of the best live sessions and networking opportunities anywhere in the cannabis world during this era of social distancing.

For years, CannX Tel Aviv has been the point of contact for key players across the world of cannabis. This year things have (obviously) changed a bit, so CannX is unveiling a completely re-imagined virtual format that will unite the world’s most influential scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers, and thought leaders — without anyone having to leave their home office.

The sessions will be split into two main areas — the Scientific Track and the Business, Industry and Agriculture Track. The subjects to be discussed cover a vast array of topics, including, “Covid-19, CBD, and Cannabis,” “Cannabinoids and the Elderly,” Round Table Discussion: Medical Cannabis and the Role of Pharmacists: The Israeli Experience,” “Cannabis and Cancer Care,” “Integrating Science and Business: A Brazilian Perspective,” Medical Cannabis Treatments: Clinical Considerations,” and a panel discussion on “Women in the Forefront of Cannabis Innovation,” to name just a few of the highlights.

The conference will also provide a unique opportunity for startups to highlight their products and initiatives, and the innovation that drives it all. The webinar’s interactive Startup Arena will give them an opportunity to pitch and promote their business, and network with people from the world of cannabis tech. The goal is for participants to use this event as a way to forge a community of highly skilled innovators, to help push the CannX community to the cutting edge of what’s happening in cannabis tech today.

At the Startup Arena, innovators can present their logo, product, and promotional materials to attendees, carry out public chat messaging, video chats, and zoom meetings with all attendees of the event. Startups will also be able to shoot a 10-minute pitch video which can be shown in the “waiting room” before live sessions of the meet.

When life gives you lemons

According to Yossi Bornstein, CannX Conference Chair, this year’s conference is a sort of “when life gives you lemons” situation on a grand scale. A pandemic means you can’t fly to a packed conference on the other side of the world? Well then the conference will come to you.

“The medical cannabis ecosystem, and humanity in general, is facing many challenges due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Going virtual opens doors to a larger global audience and also allows a much needed interaction with colleagues and friends in the field as well as establishing new networks with peers from all over the world,” Bornstein said this week.

He added that if it were an in-person event it might not be able to get all these great speakers together, “so this is another added bonus” of going virtual.

The ‘father of cannabis research’ turns 90

CannX 2020 will also hold a special event to commemorate the 90th birthday of a trailblazer in the world of cannabis research, Professor Raphael Mechoulam

Known as “the father of cannabis research,” Mechoulam is most famous for being the first researcher to ever isolate Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychotropic cannabinoid in the plant.

In the decades since, he has won a host of accolades, including the Heinrich Wieland Prize (2004), an Honorary doctorate from Complutense University (2006), the Israel Prize in Exact Sciences – Chemistry (2000), the Israel Chemical Society Prize for excellence in research (2009) and EMET Prize in Exact Sciences – Chemistry (2012).

“I have spent most of my life decoding the mysteries to be found within this incredible plant. The collective work on the plant has currently led to identifying a major physiological system, the endocannabinoid system, which appears to be involved in numerous human illnesses. I would like to see my colleagues forge ahead with their investigations, advancing even further the acceptance and integration of cannabinoids, in particular cannabidiol, its derivatives and the specific CB2 agonists, in traditional medicine,“ Mechoulam said ahead of CannX 2020.

Participants should also know that every presentation, panel discussion, and session from CannX will be available to access by participants for months after the event ends.
