Everyone has their favorite cracker, snack food, or relative, but there are few who can resist Cheez-Its. These rectangular, baked cheese crackers are savory, perfectly crunchy, and deliver providence on a surface not much larger than a postage stamp.

The good folks at Sunshine Biscuits have created a wide variety of Cheez-It flavors from original to cheddar jack, chipotle cheddar, and atomic cheddar. They have not, as of the year 2021, formulated a special cannabis edition of Cheez-Its, what are commonly-known as “Weez-Its.”

This is where you come in.

Why edibles are so special

Sure, you could always just spark up a joint or load up your vape, but there is definitely a time and a place for edibles. It can be movie night with friends, a weekend afternoon when you have absolutely nothing on your plate for the next several hours, or just some evening when you don’t feel like smoking, but still feel like having a long, thorough, full-body high.

Mainly though, edibles just feel different. With edibles, it takes about an hour or so for the high to kick in, and then the high starts to come on like gently lapping waves on the beach, with an effect that can often be stronger and last longer than smoking or vaping weed.

Edibles produce a nice and cozy body high, and are also known for triggering a strong case of the giggles. Mainly though, they are a great alternative for those who can’t or don’t want to fuss with smoking, and would like a wholly different and truly immersive cannabis experience.

What not to do with edibles

One thing to keep in mind with edibles is there are some common rookie mistakes that even some veterans may be guilty of at times.

First off, you need to be mindful of the delayed onset time when taking edibles. If you don’t feel any effects after 45 minutes or an hour, do not fret — and definitely don’t take a second dose. Take your time, and wait at least an hour and a half to gauge the effects of your dose. You don’t want to take a second dose just before the first one kicks in, only to realize you took too much and you’re a little — or a lot — higher than you wanted to be.

Another mistake is to forget to decarboxylate your weed, a step that is essential for making sure that edibles can actually get you high.

The importance of decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is a process that involves heating cannabis in order to activate the compounds in the plant. The process converts THCA into THC, without which you can’t get high by eating cannabis.

Decarboxylating is quite easy. Simply grind up the cannabis you’re using for the recipe, and heat it on an oven sheet for about 30-45 minutes at around 220-245°F (105-120°C). Keep in mind that it will produce a strong odor in your kitchen, so you might want to crack a window.

How to make cannaoil

One of the more common and easy ways to make edibles is by using an infused fat, typically either an infused oil like cannabis or coconut oil, or infused butter, also known as “cannabutter.”

To make cannabis oil for Weez-Its, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Cannabis oil is usually made with one of three different methods: saucepan, double boiler, or slow cooker.

In a saucepan, simply heat the oil and decarboxylated cannabis until it’s around 130-150°F (55-65°C) for about three hours or so. Make sure to keep an eye on it and stir frequently so it doesn’t scorch the cannabis.

With a double boiler, fill the bottom pan with water and put the oil in the stop section. Heat the cannabis and oil on low — 130-150°F (55-65°C) — for about three hours.

If you’re using a slow cooker, simply combine the cannabis and oil and heat at 130-150°F (55-65°C) for about three hours.

Whichever method you use, at the end, simply remove the oil from the heat, let it cool down, and strain it through the cheesecloth into the container to remove the cannabis. Make sure to give the cheesecloth a couple good squeezes to make sure you get all the oil out.

Recipe: Making Weez-Its — Cannabis Cheez-Its

One of the best things about Weez-Its is that it’s hard to picture how they could possibly be easier to make. You don’t need any skill in the kitchen, just some Cheez-Its, cannabis oil, some aluminum foil, an oven, and that’s it.

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 250°F (120°C).
  • Pour the Cheez-Its into a large bowl, pour the oil over them, and toss them gently making sure every Cheez-It gets a good coating of oil.
  • Spread the Cheez-Its evenly on a baking sheet covered in foil and bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until they are lightly toasted and the oil has been absorbed by the crackers.
  • Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

How much weed and dosing guidance

The decision of how many edibles you consume depends largely on your tolerance as well as the potency of the recipe in question.

This recipe produces a large amount of weed-infused Cheez-Its, and calls for a sizable amount of cannabis oil. The strength of the cannabis oil, however, is a product of how much cannabis you make it with and the THC content of that cannabis — feel free to adjust the oil recipe depending on how strong you want the Cheez-Its to be. Either way, we recommend trying a few Cheez-Its your first time, and then seeing how you feel. Just keep in mind, as anyone who has had Cheez-Its will tell you, it’s quite hard to stop after just a few.
