But not all edibles are created equal. Depending on where you buy from, the leftover remains of the solvents used to extract the cannabis from the plant can be hidden in your edibles. Many extraction methods use solvents to separate the trichomes from the plant matter – but not all of them.
What is live rosin?
In order to be deemed a “live” product, the extracted cannabis must either be extracted or frozen immediately post harvest, as opposed to entering the typical drying and curing process. By freezing the cannabis immediately post harvest, the flower has a terpene and cannabinoid profile that most similarly matches that of the plant while growing. Depending on the drying and curing process, volatile terpenes called monoterpenes decrease between 31-55%, while heavier terpenes develop.
One solventless extraction method is ice water hash, or bubble hash. This method utilizes cold water and ice to “wash” the cannabis. The cold temps will help to make the cannabis trichomes more brittle, leading to easier separation from the flower. Freezing cannabis prior to washing allows the trichomes to become even more brittle, which can lead to improved hash yields and better color. The end result is called ice water hash, which is a highly desirable type of hash. From here, the hash must be dried and pressed using a rosin press to produce live rosin. If you were to wash and press cured cannabis the resulting product would be hash rosin, not live rosin.
Unlike other extraction methods, live rosin doesn’t use a solvent. Live rosin is inherently free of harmful chemicals or leftover solvents, making the taste and experience better. With live rosin, nothing is lost from the trichomes and nothing is added, letting you enjoy the full taste and experience from the bud by preserving all the delicate chemical compounds in the trichomes.
Difference between live resin and live rosin
While shopping for edibles, you may see some packages labeled live resin and others labeled live rosin and wonder, are they the same? What’s the difference between resin and rosin?
It’s a good question because resin and rosin sound very similar but are not the same. While both are cannabis extracts and involve freezing the trichomes of fresh-frozen plants, live resin is extracted using a solvent, usually hydrocarbons, while live rosin is solventless. Rosin is the product created when heat and pressure are applied to cannabis in order to separate the cannabinoid and terpene-rich cannabis oil.
Depending on how the extraction is completed and the purging of solvent, live resin can produce concentrates with varying consistencies. Live rosin can also be manipulated into different consistencies, but commonly comes in a budder-like consistency.
Both extracts comprise many of the connoisseur products available today, whether they are concentrates, vape cartridges, or used in formulated goods. “Live” products contain higher terpene potencies because at the time of extraction, the cannabis has not lost terpenes due to the drying and curing process. As far as which product is better, that is more the consumer’s choice. Live rosin is often considered one of the products very close to a true full spectrum. As live rosin catches on in mature cannabis markets around North America, you can expect to see more products like this in emerging markets.
